What counts as scrap gold?

Scrap gold is any gold item being valued for its metal content rather than its design — typically broken jewellery, single earrings, tangled chains, bent rings, dental crowns, casting grain and small offcuts from workshops.

We sort items by carat (9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 21ct, 22ct, 24ct), test each group to confirm purity, then weigh accurately on calibrated scales. Your offer is calculated from weight × purity × current market rate, with any handling and refining adjustments shown clearly.

There is no minimum order. Customers send anything from a single broken ring through to several hundred grams of mixed scrap.

“Scrap” describes condition, not value

Typical scrap gold we value

Broken or unhallmarked doesn't mean worthless. Scrap is valued purely on tested purity and weight.

Broken chains & snapped clasps

Single earrings & odd cufflinks

Bent, damaged or worn rings

Mismatched & tangled jewellery

Unhallmarked items

We test electronically before valuing

Mixed-carat collections

Old workshop offcuts & casting grain

Gold removed from watches or settings

Plated items

Honestly identified — usually nominal value

How a scrap valuation works

Sorted, tested, weighed, then offered

  • Sorted by carat

9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 21ct, 22ct and 24ct are separated so each group is paid at the correct purity.

  • Tested by group

Hallmarks verified; unmarked items tested electronically or with acid before joining the right group.

  • Weighed individually

Calibrated scales — the weight of every piece is recorded and shown in the offer.

  • Itemised per carat

You see a per-carat figure rather than a single rounded number.

UK carat & purity reference

Each carat carries a fixed purity. Per-gram value is weight × purity × the current gold market rate, before refining and handling adjustments.

Multipliers shown are nominal purities. Indicative per-gram values follow the same multipliers when applied to the live 24ct market rate.

Frequently asked questions

Do you buy broken or damaged gold?+

Yes — broken, bent and incomplete items are perfectly fine. We're buying for the metal content.

Will you remove stones from settings?+

Where practical we remove and return stones at no charge. Let us know if anything has sentimental value.

Do you accept gold-plated items?+

Gold-plated items are typically base metal coated with a thin layer of gold and have no scrap value. We'll tell you honestly if items aren't solid gold.

How quickly do I get paid?+

Once you accept the itemised offer, payment is sent the same working day by bank transfer.
